Joining the crew
JOIN US
Division Of Forestry (DOF) is a division of the Department of Natural Resources for the State of Alaska. Below you can follow the link for a look at general information including regional offices, trainings, newsletters, and more.
Our Season is April through October and openings to join the crew will happen in December and interviews typically will be early January-February. Applying can be done on Workplace Alaska by searching for Fire & White Mountain or clicking the link below. After applying and going through the interview you’ll be walked through the next steps of what will be needed and/or provided to you for the upcoming season on the crew. Upon joining the crew, you will be put through two weeks of very physically demanding training and fire line prep work for the season, this is known as the “80”.

To become a wildland fire fighter, you need to first possess a valid Red Card. On the crew you can acquire one by completing the 80. There are also options to take red card classes either in person or online depending on your location that typically start early in the year before the season kicks off. You can find the link on the forestry website or follow the links below.
If you are coming with prior experience from outside the state from another resource or crew, then it’s simply going to be a refresher course and seeing how we operate on fires in Alaska.
If you have an interest and would like more information, fill out this form and send it in to our Crew Superintendent.
